Yesterday evening, three suspects in their thirties were arrested for theft of copper cable by members of the Durban Flying Squad Narcotics Task Team who conducted an operation after they had received intelligence of stolen copper cables. The members proceeded to Leo Avenue, Woodhurst, Chatsworth, where they found the suspects busy stripping copper cables on the premises. A further search of the premises resulted in the discovery of tons of copper cables stored in a garage. On investigation it was established that the copper cables belonged to the eThekwini Municipality. Officials from the EThekwini Municipality were called out to the scene and positively identified the property as theirs and estimated value of the recovered copper cables at R1.8 million. The three suspects were then arrested and charged for theft of copper cables. They will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrates Court soon.

“When cables are stolen, many areas are plunged into darkness and lose telephonic contact with relatives, businesses and even emergency services. The arrest and the recovery of the copper cable is commended. We urge the community to continue work hand in hand with the police in order to win this battle against copper cable theft in our province,” said KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni. “I want to congratulate members of the Durban Flying Squad Narcotics Task Team for going the extra mile and pursuing the information that was passed on to them. This Festive Season we will continue to deal a blow to these criminal groups that rob the economy of this country by destroying our infrastructure,” she added.
