Within hours of a shooting that left a taxi owner and driver dead at Groutville, the Provincial Taxi Violence Task Team made a significant breakthrough by arresting three suspects at Prospection. The suspects aged between 27 and 50 were found in possession of two R5 rifle and one revolver.

They will be charged for two murders, three attempted murders and for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. They are expected to appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrates Court on Monday, 21 October 2013. It is alleged that on Thursday, 17 October 2013 at approximately 08:00, the two deceased and three other people were travelling through Groutville when they were accosted by eight men at gunpoint. The suspects forced them out of their vehicle and opened fire on them. The taxi owner (48) and his driver (25) died instantly at the scene whilst other three victims managed to flee the scene unharmed.

The Provincial Commissioner for KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended members of the Provincial Taxi Violence Task Team for the early breakthrough in the investigation. “It is unacceptable that people can be gunned down so callously with no disregard for the life of another human being. We are confident that the remaining suspects will be brought to book and we will ensure that they are punished for their crimes,” she said.
